During the Greenbrier County Summer Academy, one of the teachers from East loaned me a book called, "The Glass Castle"--WOW! If you would like to read about someone's experiences growing up poor, growing up in the rural coal fields of WV, and overcoming their circumstances to achieve greatness in spite of her hard life, then this is a book for you! I have since started reading Jeanette Walls' most recent book that connects "The Glass Castle" to Walls' grandmother. I have been told that I will not be disappointed in this book either.
Although I did not have some of the dire circumstances of Ms. Walls, I can definitely relate with her existance and the determination to rise above and do better for myself and my own children. I also feel that this book would be a great learning experience for ANY West Virginia student, especially in how the stories relate to the hard life that can be dealt to many of the youth in West Virginia.
This year Greenbrier County Schools are focusing on student literacy...this book would be a great piece of literature for a book study.--It would be cool to contact Jeanette Walls and see if she would consider coming to our school to connect to the students as they study the book.
Can't wait to read it; loan it to me?
